Our goal at Cumberland is to create and maintain a climate conducive to learning and to the joy of discovery. Everyone within the school community shares in the responsibility for establishing and maintaining this environment. Parental involvement and support are critical elements in the success of this plan. We look forward to working together to help children grow and develop in self-discipline and responsibility.
Discipline plan:
All teachers establish classroom rules with positive and negative consequences. Within the public areas of the school (hallways, bathrooms, stairwells, lunchroom) students are expected to walk, keeping their hands and feet to themselves. When students are in the hallway they are expected to be quiet when classes are in session. Following the rules is expected. If a student does break a rule, however, they are given classroom consequences or if it is in a public area the student will usually be given an office consequence. When a student is sent to the office, a progressive discipline approach is used. If the infraction is minor, the student will generally lose recess minutes. If it happens again, or if the infraction is more serious parents are contacted and the consequences become more serious. While it is situation specific a general progression may be loss of some recess minutes, remaining inside during lunch recess, short term removal from the environment (If it is a lunchroom problem, for example, the student may be required to eat in the office for a few days.), suspension (in-school or out of school) and community service. At Cumberland, community service includes volunteering in classrooms, doing clerical tasks, or assisting the custodial staff.
Students will be sent directly to the principal for fighting or frequent daily rule violations.
When a child is sent to the principal's office, parents will be contacted to work through repeated or serious misbehaviors. Exceptional cases of misbehavior may immediately result in the following: in-school suspensions, conference with parents, out-of-school suspension.
