Ms. Heffron’s Thursday Letter
October 9, 2008
While just a little bit soggy, yesterday’s Walk to School Event was great fun. The students are excited and I like the reinforcement of walking and fitness. In keeping with our Green theme, we eliminated the distribution of bottles of water in favor of apples from Barthel’s Orchards. Students selected either a Mac or a Jonathan. One very young student told me he did not know apples were shaped like this because he has never seen one before!
Our first ever Lock Down drill went very smoothly. Students had been well prepped and the atmosphere was one of businesslike calm. We had several observers on-site collecting impressions as things progressed, including District Administrator Jim Rickabaugh, Director of Buildings and Grounds Gary Siegman, and Lieutenant Ron Stefanski our WFB School Liaison Officer and they were all struck by how orderly and quiet things were. Based on our experience yesterday and the information I collect from staff, we will continue to refine our procedures. I am curious what your children told you last night about the drill.
SAFETY ALERT: While on the front lawn, many young students or siblings run down the slope to the windows. This slope gets very slippery and I am concerned that a student is going to slip and run headlong into the windows. It is also extremely distracting to the students in the classes with windows when the youngsters bang on the windows or put their faces against them. Please do not allow your child(ren) to run down this slope into the window area, especially when classes are in progress.
Notes:
- To prevent injuries to unsuspecting people we do not allow any ball play on the blacktop before school.
- There in an incredible amount of food wasted in the cafeteria. Please encourage your child to bring home anything not eaten. This way, you can get a better idea of how much your child does eat and it gives your child a reminder to tell you that suddenly s/he hates turkey sandwiches!
- Advocates for Education to sponsor state senate candidate forum on education:
Advocates for Education of Whitefish Bay, Inc. will sponsor a forum featuring Sen. Alberta Darling and Rep. Sheldon Wasserman, candidates for Wisconsin's eighth district senate seat, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Schlitz Audubon Center, 1111 E. Brown Deer Road, Bayside.
