Cougar Pride / PBIS

The second goal of the Whitefish Bay School District's focus plan is, "Every student will experience a caring, inclusive learning environment that supports the development of the whole child with balanced attention to physical, social, emotional, and intellectual well-being."

To address this goal, the WFB School District has developed a framework for implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The effectiveness of PBIS is well noted in our state, as well as across the country. “Schools implementing PBIS build on existing strengths, complementing and organizing current programming and strategies.  The PBIS model has been successfully implemented in thousands of schools in over 40 states, resulting in dramatic reductions in disciplinary interventions and increases in academic achievement.” (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction) 

At Cumberland, a team of staff participates in ongoing PBIS training, and all staff members are engaged in the implementation of our system. Our PBIS efforts are referred to as Cougar Pride ~ Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.  These expectations are explicitly taught and reinforced throughout the school year.

The PBIS System Has 4 Components:


Throughout the year, when our school’s ticket bin fills up, we celebrate with an all-school party! Celebrations have included an:

  • All-school dance party with a DJ
  • “Blackout” party inspired by the book Blackout by John Rocco
  • Extra outdoor recess party with bubbles, chalk, and a skateboard course
  • Hawaiian party in the gym
  • School-wide fort-building party in the classrooms
