Variables Mid-Unit Study Guide

The student should...

  • understand the vocabulary: variable ( something we change in the experiment), controlled experiment (where you only change one thing to test), pendulum/ swinger, capacity( how much something holds. can be milliliters or passengers), standard (what you set up in an experiment before making any changes)
  • know what variables can be changed in the swinger (weight..no change…, length, release position…no change) and lifeboat experiment (size of the boat) and describe how these changes affect the results.
  • know the relationship that we found in each experiment.
    • The bigger the boat the more pennies it hold and the smaller the baot the fewer pennies it holds.
The longer the swinger the fewer swings in 15 seconds. The shorter the swinger the more swings in 15 seconds.
  • be able to plot data from a table onto a two-coordinate graph.
  • be able to make a prediction from a graph.

Variables End-of-Unit Study Guide

Assessment Date:

The student should...

·              know what parts make up a catapult system.

·              know what variables can be changed in your catapult system and be able to predict how this change would affect the results (how far the object goes).

·              be able to analyze an experiment and decide if it is a controlled experiment or not.

·              be able to write a good question when given a description of an experiment.

·              be able to decide what factors should be kept the same (controlled) when given a description of an experiment.

·              be able to decide what variable should be changed (the independent variable) when given a description of an experiment.

·              be able to give suggestions on how an experiment can be improved.

·              be able to use data from a table to complete a two-coordinate graph, which includes providing labels and numbering correctly.

·              be able to use a graph to make a prediction.

·              be able to use the graph to state the relationship.

Food and Nutrition Mid-Unit Study Guide
Assessment Date:

The student should...

·              know the relationships found in the fat test and the sugar test. See power conclusion.

·              be able to analyze other food samples based on the results of the experiments that we conducted and reach a conclusion about fat and sugar content based on the results.

·              understand the vocabulary words: indicator, nutrient, fat, carbohydrate, yeast, sugar, food

Solar Energy Assessment
Study Guide

  • Vocabulary – compass, solar energy, earth materials
  •   Investigation Findings – be familiar with conclusions and data gathered from each investigation; you will be able to use your notebook, but you need to be able to find and understand the information
  •   What is the relationship between the sun and the size and position of a shadow?
  •  What is the relationship between solar energy and the heating and cooling of earth materials?
