Grading Policy

Grading Criteria

Achievement of course learning objectives are the primary factor in determining grades. Furthermore, the most important skills and content knowledge are given the greatest weight. In the Computer Science department, grades are determined by:

Weighting

Overall grade weights include 37.5% for each quarter and 25% for the semester exam.

Daily Work (10%):

Written assignments (text book, worksheets, etc.) are corrected in class and are checked for completion but are not included in the grade.

Computerized lessons and written assignments that are teacher reviewed, receive 0-10 points, and lose 1 point for every day that they are late. Fully completed lessons or assignments, submitted 5 or more days late, receive 5 points.

All daily work must be submitted prior to the test on that material to receive any credit.

Projects (40%): P rojects will be routinely assigned throughout the course, and receive
0-100 points. Projects lose 3 points for each school day that they are late. Projects submitted after 20 school days or the end of the semester will receive no credit.

Tests (50%):

Tests will be given approximately once every one to two weeks.

A test missed due to absence needs to be made up within 2 days. Tests taken after this time will lose 3 points for each school day after the student returns to school. A test not taken before the next test is given will automatically receive a 0.

Students who cheat on tests are required to take a makeup test and their grade will be 50% of what they score on the makeup test.

Extended Absence

Students with extended absences must set up a schedule for making up the work they've missed, including tests, that is satisfactory with their instructor.

Group Work

Group work is used when students benefit from working with other students to complete a complex task. Group work also develops team work and collaboration skills required for college and the real world. Group work will be graded individually after considering individual contributions to the final product.

Redo Work

Only major projects that do not meet minimum requirements may be redone, but will be considered late and graded as such.

Extra Credit

Extra credit is only available with computer science programming projects where it furthers course objectives. It is not available in any other computer science or business course.

Final Exam

A comprehensive exam is given in all courses except for Computer Science 2 ummative project used in lieu of written final).

Senior Exam Exemption Policy

Second semester seniors can generally expect to exempt the final exam. However, exam exemptions will be determined on an individual basis considering ALL of the following factors:

1.             School policy (more than 4 tardies, unexcused absences, disciplinary referrals).
2.             Total number of absences.
3.             Absence on “senior skip day”.
4.             Any failing grades on tests.
5.             Any missing projects.
6.             Drop in grade from first to second quarter.
If a student is exempt from the exam, the quarter grades will be averaged to determine the semester grade.
