NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Fidget Toys: a phrase that elicits vastly different emotions from members of our school community. These tools are marketed to aid students in improving their attention and focus; some examples include spinners and thinking putty. While these toys have been around for years, for whatever reason, they seem to be flooding into schools this year. This has caused frustration for many educators, as they see them as doing more harm than good. Many teachers can describe how these tools actually decrease the attention span of children who use them and simultaneously distract other students in the classroom.
So what is a principal to do? In many schools, administrators are banning these toys from every classroom. However, I know of families who are working with therapists who encourage children with ADHD or autism to find positive ways to focus, which might include some sort of tool. Therefore, setting a strict, “no fidgets” policy is not in the best interest of all students.
Our best bet is to partner together with our families in the best interest of all children. To do that, I would like to share with you and our teachers some guidance from ADDitude Magazine, a periodical for parents of children with attention issues. In it, one blogger Kay Marner offers the following advice when selecting fidgets:
-
Teacher-approved: Consult the teacher before sending in new items.
If you and your child have been working with a therapist on the use of these tools, please be sure to share this with your teacher and get their feedback on whether or not the tool is effective. Ultimately, working together, we can support the learning of every student at WFBMS.
