Students entering First Grade General Music see the music specialist 3 times per week for 25 minutes per session. During this time, music literature is selected to introduce and reinforce benchmarks in rhythm, melody, harmony, and style. Students are expected to listen to music and begin to describe it using standard musical terminology. First Grade students embark upon the study of music literacy and are also guided through more improvisation throughout the year.
Students in First Grade, unlike those in Kindergarten, receive a separate report card grade for General Music three times per year.
As in Kindergarten, students in First Grade are responsible for two performances per year: the Festival of Lights in December and the Spring Sing in June.
