Second Grade General Music proceeds in the same manner as First Grade General Music. Literature is selected to introduce and reinforce benchmarks in rhythm, melody, harmony, and style. Students are expected to listen to music and describe it using an increasingly sophisticated vocabulary. Second Grade students arrange and create music within specific guidelines provided by the teacher. These students are exposed to working with piano keyboards in addition to the barred and unpitched instruments that have been used in Kindergarten and First Grade. The children are provided with a visual and tactile opportunity to experience the melodic concepts of raising pitch (by moving to the right) and lowering pitch (by moving to the left), as well as moving by step and by leap. As in Kindergarten and First Grade, students in Second Grade perform in the December concert (The Festival of Lights) and the June concert (The Spring Sing).
