Messages from Dr. Kasmarick
We are nearing the final countdown and our recent weather has been a reminder of this! Our teachers and students are busy, busy with final units of study, end-of-year assessments, and performance preparations. We are also working hard to earn enough tickets for one more all-school celebration. Our challenge is to fill this bucket and we can do it!

Our Richards Way focus during the month of May is perseverance and Dr. Mazius' recent presentation aligned well with this focus. He presented on cultivating optimism in children, noting that the increase in anxiety in humans, including adolescents, makes this an important topic! He emphasized that how we view adversity matters greatly – change is a staple of life and our beliefs about this can either help or hinder our ability to respond. Two key tips for parents and teachers:
- Model genuine optimism (kids watch how we respond to change and adversity)
- Give critical feedback without permanence – you’re struggling with this (fractions/spelling/ catching/violin fingering/staying organized/etc.), but you can do it!
On the topic of encouraging words, I came across this resource recently and printed a copy to keep at home: 64 Positive Things to Say to Kids. Enjoy!!

It is hard to believe that the school year is winding down and Spring Sing is just around the corner! This year’s all-school Spring Sing is on Thursday, May 25th. Our theme this year focuses on specific character traits found within Disney songs, hence the title “Singing with Character: A Disney Spring Sing.” Families of students with last names M-Z and all AM junior kindergarten families are invited to attend the 10:15 am performance and families of students with last names A-L and all PM junior kindergarten families are invited to the 1:30 pm performance. Doors will be open one hour before each performance. Please talk to your children about what they are working on and encourage them to perform for you.

Richards Student Council
The members of Student Council have been working diligently on upcycling pieces of furniture and decor items. Families and staff members will be able to bid on these items during the day of our Spring Sing concert on Thursday, May 25 as these will be on display in the front lobby. The Student Council members voted and it was decided that 25% of the profits will stay within the Student Council fund for future projects and 75% of all profits will go the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin! Way to go Student Council members!
