From the PTO
Our Kids. Our School. OUR COMMUNITY. How are you talking to your children about what’s happening in our community right now? Discussions about race, racism, inequity, and social justice are hard for adults to have, and even harder to have with our children. Education is a powerful tool, educating yourself and your family on the history of inequality and racism in our country and how to end it is necessary, and reading is a great place to start.
In support of our staff, students, and families in conversations about racism, equity, activism, and justice, the Richards PTO is donating $1,000 to the Richards Library Media Center and to our classroom libraries. This money will be used to purchase books and learning materials used to support on-going discussions of tolerance, empathy, and diversity.
The foundations of tolerance and empathy start at home. If you’re looking for ways to educate yourself, so you feel confident navigating these discussions with your children, here are a few books you may want to consider:
- Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America by Jennifer Harvey
- White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo
- Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race by Beverly Daniel Tatum

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOUND: So Proud of Our 5th Graders! Have you noticed these signs pop up in yards around our village!?? The Richards and Cumberland PTO's came together to honor all WFB 5th graders with the same yard signs as a symbol of unity as they move onto the WFB Middle School together!
Congratulations to our 5th graders! Let's virtually celebrate and congratulate our 5th graders! 5th graders, if you'd like, post a picture of yourself with your sign on the Richards PTO Facebook page and Richards community, let's congratulate our 5th graders with messages in the comments section of these posts.
Richards 5th graders, we are SO proud of you and we wish you all the luck, success and happiness as you move onto middle school!
