Messages from Dr. Kasmarick
As any educator knows, most schools in the country use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), a framework to support positive school culture through the selection of evidence-based practices and a multi-tiered continuum of support for the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral competence of all students. At Richards, this framework is referred to as THE RICHARDS WAY.
Three important framework components are listed below, along with the form they take at Richards.
PBIS Component
|
The Richards Way
|
A shared (building-wide) set of behavioral expectations
|
Our school matrix defines expected behaviors in all areas of the building.
|
Procedures for teaching these expectations to students
|
Each teacher uses the matrix to teach lessons during the first few weeks of school and throughout the year as needed
|
A continuum of procedures for encouraging displays and maintenance of these expectations
|
Individual Tickets, Shout Outs, You Rock Notes Home, Lunchroom Tickets, and We Rocked Recess Tickets
|
As you can see, we continue to grow the ways that we are encouraging and recognizing positive behavior, so we thought that sharing some information about each would be helpful.
Individual Tickets
These are given to individual students who are demonstrating the Richards Way, along with specific feedback (i.e. "thank you for using a level 0 in the hallway.") They are kept in a classroom container and counted each week. Each Friday, one ticket from each classroom container is drawn, read on the announcements, and a group photo is taken for display in our main hallway. Each teacher has a reward system tied to individual tickets earned by students in the class.
Shout Outs
These are used to recognize things that are "above and beyond." They are used by and for both students and staff and are turned into the office for announcements and a main hallway bulletin board.
You Rock Notes Home
Like Shout Outs, these are used to provide specific, positive praise and are sent home for your refrigerator!
Grade Level Lunchroom Tickets
We are working hard on being responsible in the lunchroom: level 2 conversation, level 0 when the lights go off, facing our table, and raising our hands to get up. Grade levels can earn one ticket each day for some exciting grade level rewards (to be revealed at Monday's School Meeting).
Classroom We Rocked Recess Slips
These are earned by classrooms who follow the Richards way at recess, including lining up quickly and quietly. They are kept in the classroom, often displayed outside of the door.
Our students are amazing and we just get better and better as a school community. We are having lots of fun recognizing and celebrating all of the great things they do at school!
