Welcome to Cumberland School
Approximately six hundred fifty students in junior kindergarten through fifth grade attend school here at Cumberland. Located in Whitefish Bay, the second suburb north of the city of Milwaukee, Cumberland School has a long history. The building itself was built more than seventy-five years ago and the stately brick building suggest schools of long ago. But, we are a thoroughly modern school. Our two computer labs have Internet access and students often use the computer as a tool to locate information, to generate or organize data, or on which to record ideas. Students who attend Cumberland also study traditional subjects of reading language arts, math, science and social studies.
Exciting things happen here at Cumberland. Students have opportunities each week to attend classes in art, music and physical education. They develop information literacy through study in the media center. We have a student newspaper and a very active student council, and students in fourth and fifth grades can choose to take band and orchestra lessons.
Cumberland is home to a full host of skilled adult professionals, including experienced teachers of all subjects, guidance counselors, speech therapists, a school psychologist and a social worker. There are many other adult helpers from assistants to very active parent volunteers.
As a way to focus our efforts this year here at Cumberland we have adopted three building goals. These goals are:
- Students will increase their reading comprehension.
- Students will use feedback and self-assessment to monitor and improve their learning.
- Students will build relationships resulting in an increase in behaviors that exhibit respect, compassion and empathy for others.
These goals support our Whitefish Bay Focus Plan Goals, which can be found on the home page.
We embrace diversity here at Cumberland and have students who speak more than a dozen languages. Students are involved in community service projects and actively support each other within the building.
Milestones, a before/after school child care program for children, is also available at Cumberland School. For more information on this program, contact Milestones at 414-964-5545.
