Using the Partnerships for Comprehensive Literacy (PCL) workshop approach, students in senior kindergarten through fifth grade use high quality texts as models. Daily writing and reading instructional times include strategic instruction, self selected reading and writing, and an emphasis on developing a love of reading for learning and for pleasure.
The second goal of the Whitefish Bay School District's focus plan is, "Every student will experience a caring, inclusive learning environment that supports the development of the whole child with balanced attention to physical, social, emotional, and intellectual well-being."
To address this goal, the WFB School District has developed a framework for implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The effectiveness of PBIS is well noted in our state, as well as across the country. “Schools implementing PBIS build on existing strengths, complementing and organizing current programming and strategies. The PBIS model has been successfully implemented in thousands of schools in over 40 states, resulting in dramatic reductions in disciplinary interventions and increases in academic achievement.” (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction)
At Cumberland, a team of staff participates in ongoing PBIS training, and all staff members are engaged in the implementation of our system. Our PBIS efforts are referred to as Cougar Pride ~ Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. These expectations are explicitly taught and reinforced throughout the school year.
Cougar Pride: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe
The PBIS System Has 4 Components:
- Behavior Expectations
- Mini-lessons and Activities
- Individual & Group Acknowledgment
- Data Collection
