Welcome to Cumberland School

Built in 1928, Cumberland School is a beautiful brick building surrounded by a large playground and green spaces. Located in Whitefish Bay, the second suburb north of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan, Cumberland School has approximately 700 students in Junior Kindergarten through fifth grades. One of two elementary schools in the Whitefish Bay School District, Cumberland is an exceptional place to learn with school staff working closely in partnership with families and the community.

Students at Cumberland benefit from highly skilled grade level teams who work closely together to plan and implement learning experiences that help students develop skills and understandings that prepare them for the future. Technology is used as a tool to support learning. Many rooms having Smart Boards and two fully equipped computer labs allow full classes to participate in lessons and learning that reach beyond the walls of the school. The emphasis on academic rigor does not exclude the arts. Students in all grades participate in weekly art, music, physical education and information technology lessons. In grades 1-5, students have twice weekly Spanish lessons and students in 4th and 5th grades can elect to play an orchestra or band instrument with instruction provided during the school day.

The Cumberland student body is rich in diversity with students speaking more than a dozen languages. Students with special education needs are included in regular education classrooms and experiences at the highest levels. A wide range of learning needs are met through full time guidance staff, reading and math support teachers, and Special Education staff including teachers, speech and language pathologists and occupational and physical therapists. Other professional staff includes a teacher to support gifted and talented programming and a school psychologist who works closely with teachers and families.

Students’ experiences are also expanded beyond the classroom with an active Student Council, Community Service group and performance opportunities in music. A very active Parent Teacher Organization enriches the educational and social experiences of children through supplementary programming, events and monetary support of the schools. Parents are encouraged to participate in the PTO and to volunteer within the school.

Milestones, a before and after school child care program for children, is available at Cumberland School. For more information on this program contact Milestones at 414.964.5545.
