Thursday letter from Ms. Heffron and Ms. Salomon: December 15th, 2022

WFB High School Big Buddies come to Cumberland to meet with their Little Buddies!
Cumberland is fairly buzzing right now. Approaching Winter Break, many students have heightened emotions. Some students are excited for upcoming gatherings with family and friends. Some students are thinking non-stop about presents. Some students dread school breaks because they won’t see school friends for many days. Some students are unusually tired because of special events in the evenings during December. My own children, now adults at 38 and 39, were children of a blended family and they talked about the combination of excitement and fatigue with multiple holiday family gatherings because of having more than one household. Whether our students celebrate end of the year holidays or not, another overlay for everyone is lots of illness in the air. In our student population, RSV and influenza are more common right now than COVID and we are also seeing the instant onset of vomiting.
For the next week, you can help your child or children by doing as many of the following as possible:
- Maintain a regular and consistent schedule of meals and bedtime.
- Include protein and limit sweets in lunches. Students do best with even energy for the afternoon.
- Focus on kindnesses or generosity to others as an antidote to obsession about the gift/s a student wants
- Keep your child home if she/he is sick. As a reminder, students with a fever of 100.4 are excluded from school. Students have to be fever free for 24 hours without medication before they can return to school. Further information about when to keep a child home from school is located on our clinic site, linked here.
We are very grateful to the Cumberland PTO who is disbursing more than $11,000 to teacher requests. Some examples of requests are indoor recess games and activities and alternative classroom seating. Complete details will be on the PTO Facebook page. Thanks, PTO!
ALL SCHOOL Pajama Day, Thursday next week, December 22nd, is the last student day before Winter Break. The Student Council is sponsoring a school wide pajama day. From the Student Council: The Cumberland Student Council Spirit team is hosting an ALL SCHOOL Pajama Day on December 22nd. Slippers or blankets are not allowed. Small stuffed animals, fitting into the backpack, are allowed. Have Fun! Spirit Team
Thursday Letter: We will send a brief Thursday letter next week. In case you are already on a Winter Break brain then, Ms. Salomon and I wish you a healthy Winter Break and Happy New Year. We will see students back on Tuesday, January 3rd.
