Thursday letter from Ms. Heffron and Ms. Salomon: March 16, 2023

What started with thirteen fourth grade teams and seventeen fifth grade teams (Wow!) turned into the final four teams competing for the Battle of the Books championship yesterday. It was clear that our final four teams were well-matched and prepared as they answered questions around the content of 20 different books and showcased their reading skills. We are very proud of all of our teams that participated in our Battle of the Books competitions the past couple of months and can’t thank our families enough for supporting this extra-curricular reading at home. We also want to highlight and give a big Shout Out to our library team, Valerie Mallmann and Jane Miller for helping to prepare each and every team, for putting in the extra time and effort into making this happen and for fostering a love and joy for reading at Cumberland!
School District of Whitefish Bay Elementary and Middle School Summer Programs: The Whitefish Bay School District’s Elementary and Middle School Summer programs are currently and specifically designed for students who would benefit from additional support in Mathematics and Language Arts. This year, our Summer school registration is limited only to those students who have been recommended by their teachers and/or the Pupil Services team. All teacher recommendations and Summer School registration information will be shared with designated families by Thursday, March 23rd at parent-teacher conferences or by email.
Our Summer School, 4 - week, 8:30-11:00 am program will take place on Mondays through Thursdays each week from Monday, June 19th through Thursday, July 20, 2023 this year. No classes will be held during the week of July 4th, 2023.
Spring conferences, March 23rd:
- Teachers prepare extensively for conferences, and March 23rd is the date allocated for Spring conferences when teachers are not teaching. Teachers are not allowed to schedule conferences outside of this window. If your child’s teacher has any concerns and you are not able to attend on March 23rd (in person or virtually), the teacher will send an email with a summary.
- Two-household parents/guardians sometimes request separate conferences. This is problematic as the dialogue, discussion, and conclusions in each conference may vary. Therefore, parents/ guardians are asked to attend one conference together and to sign up accordingly. Thank you ahead of time for cooperating with this structure.
Safety and Security: During the school-day, we are responsible for the safety of students and staff, and you may have noticed that John and Barb in our main office ask, “How may we help you?” when you buzz at the main office during school hours. We instituted this added intentional step instead of automatically opening the door when it is buzzed, to maximize conditions for safety within the schools. Thank you ahead of time for your understanding of the many steps we take to keep everyone as safe as possible.
Wisconsin Forward Exam: Students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the Wisconsin Forward Exam testing in April. More detailed information can be found in this brochure. All testing will take place in the morning. Your help in not making appointments on these dates is much appreciated! Please ensure that all fifth graders come to school with their fully charged chrome book. We also encourage a great night sleep every night and breakfast in the morning for all of our students to help support their energy and best thinking.
- Third Grade: April 5-6; 12-14
- Fourth Grade: April 5-6; 12-14; 18-20
- Fifth Grade: April 5-6; 12-14
Warm regards, Jayne Heffron and Rebecca Salomon
